Geological events are beyond our control. We and all life on this
planet are subject to them. We have sufficient understanding of the
history of our planet to know that extinctions at various scales,
including almost total, are the rule. We do not know the exact timing
of the episodic events which may kill us, but we know they will occur
and that they include at least earthquakes, volcanoes, meteors, and
weather conditions. Protesting that “The End is Nigh” will not
save us or other life on this planet. But action can. Efforts such as
seed banks, gene banks, closed ecological life support systems,
population migration, and global emergency response can provide our
species with enormously improved odds of survival.
